Three Decades at the GLBT Historical Society

The GLBT History Museum was established in San Francisco’s Castro District seven years ago as a project of the GLBT Historical Society, which had been collection lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender archives since 1985. The museum has become a destination for visitors from around the world, but it is not an ordinary tourist attraction. Instead, it works to document and share the queer past as a way of promoting social justice, helping LGBT people feel a sense of pride and encouraging non-LGBT people to understand those who may seem different from themselves. Preserving the LGBT past thus serves as a means of creating equality and building a future where all members of society are treated with respect. At this event, we will learn about the work of this pioneering San Francisco institution and will discuss how similar initiatives might develop in Japan.
サンフランシスコGLBT歴史博物館は2011年に常設の博物館としてオープンしました。これを運営するGLBT歴史協会（Historical Society）は、性的マイノリティの人々が団体または個人として残してきた様々な資料を収集し、展示だけでなく研究会や講演会、あるいはフィールドワークなど多様な活動を展開し、北米だけでなく世界各地から来訪者を迎えています。
収集品にはパンフレットや新聞、あるいは個人の書簡のような文字資料だけでなく、往時の人々の暮らしぶりを伝える貴重な写真やフィルム、パレードやステージのような晴れの場で着用された衣装など、さまざまなモノ資料も含まれています。
博物館ではこれらの展示によって当時の性的マイノリティの人々の暮らしぶりを伝えるだけでなく、それを通じて孤立しがちな性的マイノリティの人々の間に「コミュニティ」という意識を醸成し、相互扶助、権利獲得などの運動にもつなげようと努めています。
今回のオープンフォーラムでは歴史協会の設立メンバーであり、今も中心的に活動されているジェラード・コスコヴィッチ（Gerard Koskovich）氏をお招きし、過去の人々の生きた証を守ることと今を生きる人々、とりわけ若い性的マイノリティの人々を励ますことの関連についてご報告いただきます。
なお、報告は英語で行なわれますが、日本語を補足した資料を用意する予定です。
